Rothschild Boulevard

We begin this tour at the western end of Rothschild Boulevard 1 [map], part of the original Tel Aviv garden suburb that was established in 1909. Built over a dried riverbed, the boulevard is Tel Aviv’s most elegant address, featuring a central promenade dotted with trees, benches, and refreshment stands, as well as a cycle path. At the western end of the street, which predates the Bauhaus style, buildings are of an eclectic nature, combining European and Ottoman styles.

This is the heart of Tel Aviv’s financial district and there are several museums here too. The Independence Hall, at number 16, the former residence of the city’s first mayor, Meir Dizengoff. The Declaration of Independence was signed here on 15 May 1948, and it was also the first home of the Knesset (parliament) until it moved to the Opera Tower building on the beach, and then to Jerusalem. The second and third floors comprise the Bible Museum (Sun–Fri 9am–1pm, Sat 10am–2pm).
